Car Trunk Organizer

Picture
Cars are almost our second home.  Whether it is carting kids to practice and lessons, or grocery shopping or simply going from A to B, it doesn't take long for the car to fill up with junk or lose things.

Losing things is the number one problem when I was carting my kids around in the car.  Things would end up underneath the seats or down the back of the seat, or better yet, the trunk would turn into a sandy mess with beach towels, soccer balls, and empty snack bags.  It wasn't until we had to find the spare tire, that I decided enough was enough and needed to get organized.

Take an Hour and Empty
The easiest way to get started on this is to simply pick a sunny day and empty the car.  Look everywhere, trunk, seats, under seats.  Now treat your car to a vacuum and a quick cleaning.  This will make you feel instantly better when you are driving with all the coffee spills and yuk removed.  If you don't want to do this yourself, it would be a worthwhile investment to hire the neighbor kid, or your own kids.

Separate the things you removed from the car into piles such as:  GARBAGE and RECYCLING and KEEP and even LAUNDRY (clothes tend to build up in the car too!)

This would be a good time to make sure all your emergency equipment is still OK, as most cars have the spare tire and jack under the floor panel of the trunk.  That is why it is so important to keep this area organized.  Maybe treat yourself to a packaged emergency kit that can be kept neatly to one side of the trunk.

CAR EMERGENCY KIT
Everything you need all fits in the bag at the top left of the picture.  This way you are not rummaging on that rainy night looking for gloves, or booster cables etc.

These kits also make handy gifts.

Invest in Car Trunk Organizers
You could simply use small totes from the dollar store to separate things in the trunk.  My hubby does that for car supplies such as windshield fluids and oil and some gloves, but it would be nice to have it organized in such a way that it doesn't all fall over if you turn quickly.

As you can see by the above picture, this organizer expands and will fit everything in the top picture.  Your trunk will actually seem bigger, and you will be able to hold more cargo especially if you take driving vacations, or even a day at the beach.

This one expands to hold everything and will also fold flat when not in use.

Over Back Seat Organizer
If you simply do not have room in your trunk for a organizer that sits on the floor of the trunk but you have a back seat that you can utilize from the trunk, then you could get one of these organizers that actually attach to the back seat headrests and off the floor.  This gives you even more room for storage as you can see in the picture above.

If you want something safer, with a good fitting tight lid, such as for chemicals, or to transport paints and supplies, this tote by Rubbermaid can be used in your car trunk.  It will keep chemicals and tools etc together and safe and can simply be lifted out of the trunk.  You could have one of these as well as the open organizers above and it will all fit in your trunk nicely.

Net Organizer
If you just want something to separate things in the trunk rather than containers, this will do the trick too.  It is a net that is sturdy, flexible and attaches easily to the car.  It can separate out cleaners or anything you don't want rolling around the trunk or the interior of the car.
Trunk Organizers for Cars

You don't have to invest a ton of money to organize your vehicle.  You can get creative with your own containers, or some from the dollar store, but specifically designed storage containers are not that expensive and will help keep clutter to a minimum.   Trying to find things is one of the biggest problems in your car as things roll around every time you turn a corner.  This can also be dangerous especially if you have things under pressure such as pop bottles or chemicals.  You don't want to be trying to shampoo or replace the trunk carpet.

Most hardware stores will sell these but there is such a huge variety online and it is worth comparing prices.  Every ones needs are different.  So check them out and vision what you carry around and see what works best for you.
